OIC to have regional headquarters in Baghdad
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, announced on Monday the government’s approval of establishing a regional headquarters for the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Baghdad.
Al-Sudani’s remarks took place during his meeting with the OIC’s Secretary-General, Hissein Brahim Taha, and his accompanying delegation, where they discussed issues and challenges facing Arab and Islamic societies because of hate speech and some anti-Islam practices, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The Iraqi Prime Minister highlighted the importance of coordination between Islamic countries in confronting abnormal behaviors that may affect young people in Arab and Islamic societies.
Al-Sudani explained that Iraq has suffered from extremism and terrorism for many years, adding that the Iraqis were able to overcome these challenges and confront attempts to fuel hatred and violence.
The Iraqi Prime Minister noted Iraq’s important role in narrowing down differences between Islamic countries in the region out of its belief that dialogue is the best way to face challenges.
The OIC is an intergovernmental organization founded in 1969, consisting of 57 member states, 48 of which are Muslim-majority countries. Its current headquarters is in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
