Parliament Speaker, UN Commissioner discuss forming Human Rights Commission
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq’s Parliament Speaker, Mohammed Al-Halbousi, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, highlighted the importance of formatting the Human Rights Commission, the Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.
The Parliament Speaker’s press office mentioned in a statement that Al-Halbousi received Turk and his accompanying delegation, which included the UN Human Rights Chief of OHCHR Asia, Pacific, Middle East and North Africa branch, Francesco Motta, the UN Human Rights spokesperson, Ravina Shamdasani, and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, Jeanine Antoinette Hennis-Plasschaert.
The statement illustrated that the meeting addressed topics related to human rights and existing laws that will be presented in Parliament, such as enforced disappearance, freedom of expression, and laws organizing the work of media institutions, as well as the need to form the Human Rights Commission.
The meeting also tackled the conditions of the missing and displaced, in addition to issues related to climate change and the role of the OHCHR to help address these challenges
