Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity announced it signed a contract with a Chinese company to develop the Al-Mansuriya gas power plant, the Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Electricity, Ahmed Musa, mentioned in a statement that the ministry, represented by the General Company for Electrical Energy Production, signed a contract with the Chinese company, Shanghai Electric, within the Iraqi-Chinese framework agreement, to construct and install combined cycle units in the Al-Mansuriya gas power plant.

Musa elaborated that the project includes two generating units with a capacity of 362 megawatts.

The Iraqi official elaborated that there are promising projects to install combined cycle units in the Al-Quds, Dhi Qar and Al-Samawa gas-operated power plants.

Musa illustrated that work is underway with the Ministry of Oil to operate the second unit in the Akaz power station in the western Iraqi governorate of Anbar.

The Director of the General Company for Electrical Energy Production, Ali Ahmed Al-Saadi, explained that the minister’s directives and the ministry’s steps were serious to bridge the gap between supply and demand in terms of energy generation.

Al-Saadi added that work is underway to prepare full studies to sign new contracts for other projects.

Al-Mansuriya Gas and Power Station Project  was financed by the United States’ Iraq Relief & Reconstruction Fund (IRRF), which was created after the 2003 war.

Combined cycle units reduce fuel costs. Additionally, they contribute to the reduction of environmental pollution and global warming.
