 UNAMI’s head appointed as Special Coordinator for Lebanon

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, appointed on Monday the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, as the head of the Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL).

Hennis-Plasschaert of the Netherlands now succeeds Joanna Wronecka of Poland, to whom the Secretary-General is grateful for her commitment and leadership of UNSCOL, according to a statement released by the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General.

Hennis-Plasschaert has been in this role since 2018. She has over 25 years of experience in diplomacy, international security, and Middle East affairs.

Before that, she served as the Netherlands’ first female Minister of Defense from 2012 to 2017.

She has previously held positions in the European Parliament from 2004 to 2010 and in the Netherlands House of Representatives from 2010 to 2012.

Hennis-Plasschaert also held positions in the European Commission in Belgium and Latvia, as well as in the city of Amsterdam.

Hennis-Plasschaert speaks Dutch natively and is fluent in English, French, and German.
