Junior Iraqi soccer team tops Group C after thrashing India 5-0
ARBIL / IraqiNews.com: Iraq’s junior soccer team thrashed India 5-0 in a game played on the pitch of Francois Hariri in the northern Iraq Kurdish city of Arbil on Thursday, topping Group C of the Asia eliminations qualifying to the continent’s finals. The first goal was scored by striker Amjad Waleed at the 9th minute of the first half, followed by another scored by Mostafa Jawdat at the 33rd minute. The other three goals were scored during the second half. Earlier, Arbil, the capital city of the semi-autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan region, hosted the inaugural ceremonies of the 36th Asian junior soccer eliminations tournament on Thursday. Playing in this tournament are Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, India and Afghanistan. The first game of the tournament today saw Saudi Arabia defeating Afghanistan 5-1. Kuwait and Oman are expected to play today to cap the encounters of the tournament’s first day. AmR (P) 1
