Journalists Protection Law, Parliament’s preliminary draft-laws – Speaker
BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: The Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, Usama al-Nujeifi, has reiterated on Wednesday that the “Journalists Protection Law,” will be among the leading draft-laws to be passed by the Parliament soon. “The Press is a sacred and great issue that must must be genuinly supported, in order to achieve democracy in Iraq, where the media enjoys a leading role in supporting the democarcy, especially if the media is independent,” Speaker Nijeifi told a delegation from the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate, led by its Leader, Moayaad al-Lamy. “The Jouranlists Protection Law is one of the leading topics on the Parliament’s agenda,” he reiterated. A Parliament statement pointed out that the delegation of the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate had “presented its congratulations to Speaker Nujeifi, on the occasion of his assignment for the Speaker’s post.” Lamy pointed to the “difficulty of the journalistic activity in Iraq, especially in that the Law for Journalists Protection had not been promulgated till now, along with other problems confronting the journalistic family.” SKH/SR 2
