Workshop on provincial elections in Arbil

ARBIL / IraqiNews.com: The Union to Increase Citizens’ Awareness in Arbil city on Thursday organized a workshop on provincial elections with the participation of clerics and chieftains. “Fifty men of religion and tribal leaders from Arbil province have participated in the one-day event,” the head of the office of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) in Arbil, Handreen Mohammed, told IraqiNews.com. The workshop aims to inform the participants of their right to elect their representatives, Mohammed added. Arbil, also written Erbil or Irbil, is believed to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited in the world and is one of the largest cities in Iraq. The city lies eighty kilometers (fifty miles) east of Mosul. In 2005, its estimated population was 990,000 inhabitants. The city is the capital of the autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan region and the Kurdistan Regional Government Kurdistan RegionG). It hosts the headquarters of the Kurdistan region ministers and parliament.
